QUICK.DOC - (Print this and keep it handy)

So you're the type that doesn't like to RTFM, huh? Here's how to get
GAP_MERGE up and running safely and in a hurry. If you're using the
demo version of GAP_Merge, please bear in mind this version is
single-user (all nodes must be down) and will merge only the first
area/subject from the source filebase. I'm sorry about the limitations,
but a lot of time and effort went into writing GAP_Merge and I need to
ensure that everyone who uses the program pays for it.
1) Create a separate directory called GAPMERGE and copy the contents of
the original zip there.
2) Backup your original FILES.DAT, FILES.IDX, FILEKEY.DAT and FILEKEY.IDX.
3) Backup your original DIRS and FILES.DIR
4) Print out your DIRS file, examine it and determine just how many
directories you will be adding or where you would like to move them.
If you're actually merging two filebases, print out both DIRS files,
marking them so you know which is the source and which is the
destination. (The process will go quicker if the destination is
the filebase with the most files already in it, though you may
have other reasons for wanting to do it the other way.)
5) With an ASCII editor, create a new DIRS and FILES.DIR to reflect
the changes you will ultimately make and then print out the new
DIRS file, marking it so you know it's the new one.
6) Write down the names of the source and destination directories.
(GAP_Merge expects the source and destination filebases to be in
different directories.)
7) Determine if a drive designator translation is necessary. If you're
merging a CD-ROM filebase in with your regular filebase, chances
are the drive specified in the CD-ROM filebase is not the same as
your CD-ROM drive designator. GAP_Merge can take care of changing
all the E:\001A directories in the CD-ROM filebase to the X:\001A
(or whatever) you need for your CD setup.
8) Run GAP_MERGE and follow the prompts.
9) Once the filebase has been created, copy it over your old DAT and
IDX pairs. Also copy the new DIRS and FILES.DIR over the old ones.
10) If you are adding directories, run GAPSETUP and change the number
of directories to reflect the changes you made.
11) If you name your directories with names like DIR1, DIR2 ect., you
will need to copy the files to the subdirectory reflecting the
changes and delete the files from the original directory. (You may
find it quicker to use a directory renaming utility so you don't
have to move files all over the place. Start by renaming all the
affected directories to a unique but different name. Try adding an
'A' to the end of the name. Now you can rename them again to the
real name without having any collisions.) If you're merging two
filebases and not moving any files around, you can skip this step
and the next step. If you name your directories by topic like COMM,
GIF etc, you won't have to worry about this or the next step.
(This might be a good time to switch to naming your directories by
topic instead of number if you don't already do this. In the long
run, it's much easier to maintain and it makes a lot more sense.)
11) If you changed the home directory name for your files, you now need
to run GAPFILE's global change and update the new resident
directory for relocated files. Again, if you did not change the
home directory for your relocated files, you can skip this step.
12) If you added directories in order to split up directories that have
grown too large, you can now run GAPFILE's move command and move these
files to the newly created directories.
13) Run GAPFILE's global update or, better yet, run GAP_Verify, to make
sure GAP knows where all the files are.
14) Run GAPPACK to pack your new filebase.
15) Create new DIR/DIRG/DIRR files to reflect your new setup and copy them
to your \GEN directory.
That's it! Sound complicated? It really isn't and it sure beats the
alternative.
